Cleaning the cutting boards is important because they come in contact with food and raw meat. Even though washing the board before each time you used it will prevent bacteria from building up, not cleaning your board could lead to bacterial infections. Here are some simple steps on how to clean your cutting board properly.

1. Check the Cutting Board for Bacteria

First of all, make sure the cutting board is clean from any bacteria. Before you start to clean it, check by wiping off any food particles on the board with a paper towel. Then turn it upside down for about 5 minutes to let it dry completely. You can also squeeze some hydrogen peroxide onto the cutting board and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.

2. How to Clean a Cutting Board

When the cutting board is clean, get a warm soapy sponge and wash the board using hot water. If the board has residue on it, make sure to use a clean sponge and scrub until you can no longer see any residue. Repeat this step until you are sure all residue is gone. When you wash away all traces of food, it will be easier for your next step.

3. How to Disinfect a Cutting Board

Next, rinse the board with hot water and soap. You can use disinfecting liquid dishwashing soap or rubbing alcohol solution. Last, allow it to dry completely. Now you are ready for the next step! If you have any lingering bacteria on the board, wash it again with a mild antibacterial liquid dishwashing soap or rubbing alcohol solution and let it dry.

4. How to Prevent Bacteria from Building Up

There are several methods for preventing bacteria from accumulating on the board. First, occasionally rinse the board with hot water and soap. This will prevent bacteria from building up on it if you do not use it for a while. Another method is to lightly brush it with soap before use. If you are going to eat off the cutting board after washing, make sure you do not let your hands come in contact with raw meat or uncooked food and wash your hands or clean them before touching raw meat.
